Questions

Frequently asked questions

How overdue can a dog be?

From a confirmed ovulation date, labor should begin by about day 65. From a mating date alone, normal pregnancies run from day 58 to 68 or more. If she passes these without signs, call your vet.

Can a dog go 70 days pregnant?

From the first mating date, it can be normal. From ovulation, 70 days is overdue and needs a vet check the same day.

What if her temperature has dropped but no puppies?

Labor usually follows within 8 to 24 hours. If it has been more than 24 hours with no signs, call your vet.

Can I induce labor at home?

No. Do not give any medicine or try to induce labor yourself. Your vet will assess her and the puppies first.

Why was my due date wrong?

Dogs can mate days before ovulation, and sperm can live for days. Counting from the mating date can be off by a week. See how accurate a dog due date is.
