How accurate is a dog due date?

A dog due date is only as good as the date behind it. A mating date gives a two-week window, while an ovulation date gives about two days.

Why mating dates are loose

  • Sperm outlives the mating. It can survive for several days in the female tract before the eggs are ready.
  • Eggs need time to mature. A dog’s eggs need about two to three days after ovulation before they can be fertilized.
  • Ovulation is not on a fixed day of heat. So a mating on a given day tells you little about when conception happened.

How to tighten the date

If she has not been mated yet, ask your vet about progesterone testing. If she already has, an ultrasound at about day 25 to 30 can estimate gestational age, and an X-ray after day 45 to 50 shows how developed the skeletons are. Both are wider estimates than hormone testing.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is a dog pregnancy calculator?

It is only as accurate as the date you give it. From a mating date the normal window is about 14 days. From a confirmed ovulation date it is about 2 days.

My dog whelped on day 58 after mating. Is that early?

Not necessarily. If conception happened a few days after mating, day 58 from mating could be day 62 or more from ovulation, which is normal.

When is a dog overdue?

More than a couple of days beyond day 65 from ovulation, or beyond day 70 from mating, without signs of labor. Call your vet.
