Pomeranian pregnancy

Pomeranian pregnancy: gestation, litter size and C-section risk

Very small breed with tiny litters. Eclampsia is a significant risk.

Very small litters

With one or two puppies, each can grow large, and a lone puppy may not trigger labor on time. An X-ray at about day 50 shows the count and head size.

Calcium and sugar risks

Eclampsia is a notable risk in Pomeranians. Signs include restlessness, panting, tremors, stiffness and seizures. It is an emergency, and giving calcium without veterinary advice during pregnancy can make it more likely.

Warmth and small meals

Keep the whelping room warm, offer small frequent meals and have the emergency clinic number ready.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How long is a Pomeranian (Pom) pregnant?

Pomeranians are pregnant for about 63 days from ovulation, and most whelp in 62 to 63 days. Counted from a mating date, the normal range is 56 to 70 days, because conception can happen days after mating. Use the calculator on this page to get a date range.

How many puppies can a Pomeranian (Pom) have?

A typical Pomeranian litter is about 2 puppies, with a range of 1 to 4. First litters and litters from older dogs are often smaller. An abdominal X-ray after day 50 gives the actual count.

Does a Pomeranian need a C-section?

Pomeranians have a higher than average risk of difficult birth. Many vets recommend an X-ray at about day 50 to check puppy size, and a planned C-section is sometimes safer.

What are the signs a Pomeranian is pregnant?

Around three to four weeks you may notice a smaller appetite, pinker and larger nipples and a clear mucus discharge. Her belly grows from about week six. Confirm with an ultrasound at about day 25 to 30.

When should a pregnant Pomeranian have an X-ray?

Between about day 50 and day 55. By then the puppies’ skeletons show, so your vet can count them and compare head size with her pelvis.
