Worth knowing
- 86.1% of English Bulldog litters are delivered by C-section (Evans & Adams, 2010)
- Puppies have very large heads relative to the dam's pelvic canal
- Emergency C-sections cost 2-3x more than planned ones — always schedule in advance

English Bulldog pregnancy at a glance
| English Bulldog | |
|---|---|
| Gestation from ovulation | about 63 days (63 days average) |
| Gestation from mating | 56 to 70 days |
| Typical litter | 4 puppies (range 3 to 5) |
| Size group | medium breed |
| C-section risk | Very high (86.1%) |
Highest C-section rate of any breed. Natural whelping should not be assumed.
Natural birth should not be assumed
Broad shoulders, big skulls and a narrow pelvis make obstructed labor common in this breed. Evans and Adams (2010) reported the bulldog among the breeds with the very highest caesarean rates. Most pregnancies are managed with an elective C-section.
Plan the date, the clinic and the backup
Choose a clinic that will perform the surgery, ideally one that can also handle after-hours emergencies, and agree the date from ovulation timing. Know the route to the 24-hour emergency hospital in advance in case she starts labor before the planned date.
Keep her cool and calm
Bulldogs overheat easily, and late pregnancy adds weight and pressure on the diaphragm. Keep her in a cool room, avoid exercise in warm weather and watch for noisy or labored breathing, which needs a vet visit.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
How long is a English Bulldog pregnant?
English Bulldogs are pregnant for about 63 days from ovulation, and most whelp in about 63 days. Counted from a mating date, the normal range is 56 to 70 days, because conception can happen days after mating. Use the calculator on this page to get a date range.
How many puppies can a English Bulldog have?
A typical English Bulldog litter is about 4 puppies, with a range of 3 to 5. First litters and litters from older dogs are often smaller. An abdominal X-ray after day 50 gives the actual count.
Does a English Bulldog need a C-section?
Most English Bulldogs are delivered by C-section: about 86.1% in the research we cite. Plan the surgery with your vet rather than waiting for labor.
What are the signs a English Bulldog is pregnant?
Around three to four weeks you may notice a smaller appetite, pinker and larger nipples and a clear mucus discharge. Her belly grows from about week six. Confirm with an ultrasound at about day 25 to 30.
When should a pregnant English Bulldog have an X-ray?
Between about day 50 and day 55. By then the puppies’ skeletons show, so your vet can count them and compare head size with her pelvis.
