Von Willebrand disease testing

Von Willebrand disease is an inherited bleeding disorder common in the breed. Testing before breeding is recommended, and tell your vet if she is affected before any surgery.

Large litters

With up to eleven puppies, an X-ray after day 50 gives the count. Delivery can be long, so know the signs that need a vet.

Heart screening

Heart disease is also a concern in the breed. Ask your vet whether a cardiac check is advised before or during pregnancy.

Between about day 50 and day 55. By then the puppies’ skeletons show, so your vet can count them and compare head size with her pelvis.
