Chihuahua pregnancy

Chihuahua pregnancy: gestation, litter size and C-section risk

Chihuahuas have small litters and a higher risk of difficult births, because the puppies’ heads are large relative to a very small pelvis. Low blood calcium and low blood sugar are also real risks, so vet supervision is essential.

Worth knowing

  • High dystocia risk — ensure a vet experienced with toy breeds is on standby
  • Eclampsia (low blood calcium) is a serious risk during nursing
  • Single-puppy litters may produce oversized puppies requiring C-section
  • Hydrocephalus ("water on the brain") is more common in apple-head Chihuahuas

Temperature watch: take her temperature twice a day from day 56. A drop below 99.0°F (37.2°C) means labor within 12–24 hours.

Chihuahuas have elevated dystocia risk due to their tiny pelvis and relatively large puppy heads.

Small dog, big puppy heads

Litters are usually one to five puppies, and a single large puppy is a known risk. Many vets recommend an X-ray at about day 50 to assess puppy size against the pelvis and decide whether a planned C-section is safer.

Eclampsia and low blood sugar

Toy breeds can develop low blood calcium (eclampsia) during late pregnancy or nursing, with tremors, stiffness or seizures. Low blood sugar is also a danger. Both are emergencies. Do not give calcium supplements in pregnancy unless your vet tells you to.

Small meals and a warm, quiet room

Late pregnancy leaves little room for food, so offer four small meals a day of a high-energy diet. Keep the whelping area warm and draft-free, and have your vet’s emergency number ready.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How long is a Chihuahua pregnant?

Chihuahuas are pregnant for about 63 days from ovulation, and most whelp in 62 to 63 days. Counted from a mating date, the normal range is 56 to 70 days, because conception can happen days after mating. Use the calculator on this page to get a date range.

How many puppies can a Chihuahua have?

A typical Chihuahua litter is about 3 puppies, with a range of 1 to 5. First litters and litters from older dogs are often smaller. An abdominal X-ray after day 50 gives the actual count.

Does a Chihuahua need a C-section?

Chihuahuas have a higher than average risk of difficult birth. Many vets recommend an X-ray at about day 50 to check puppy size, and a planned C-section is sometimes safer.

What are the signs a Chihuahua is pregnant?

Around three to four weeks you may notice a smaller appetite, pinker and larger nipples and a clear mucus discharge. Her belly grows from about week six. Confirm with an ultrasound at about day 25 to 30.

When should a pregnant Chihuahua have an X-ray?

Between about day 50 and day 55. By then the puppies’ skeletons show, so your vet can count them and compare head size with her pelvis.
