Boxer pregnancy

Boxer pregnancy: gestation, litter size and C-section risk

Boxers have medium litters of about four to nine puppies and a moderate risk of birthing difficulty, because the puppies’ heads are broad. An X-ray around day 50 helps your vet decide whether to expect a natural birth.

Brachycephalic influence can occasionally require assistance or C-section.

Broad heads, moderate risk

Boxers have some of the flat-faced build seen in brachycephalic breeds, and large puppy heads can occasionally need assistance or a C-section. Ask your vet to check head size against her pelvis on the day-50 X-ray.

Heat and breathing

A shortened muzzle means she overheats and tires easily late in pregnancy. Keep her cool, limit exercise in warm weather and call your vet if her breathing becomes noisy or labored.

Heart health

Boxers are screened for heart conditions before breeding. If she has a known heart condition, tell your vet so they can plan monitoring and the safest delivery.
