Questions

Frequently asked questions

When should I have whelping supplies ready?

At least two weeks before the due date, and certainly by day 56 from ovulation, when you start taking her temperature.

What size whelping box do I need?

Large enough for her to lie fully stretched out with room to spare, with low sides she can step over and rails that stop her pressing puppies against the wall. Ask your breeder or vet for a size for her breed.

What temperature should the whelping room be?

About 75 to 80°F (24 to 27°C), with a safe heat source in one part of the box so she and the puppies can move away from it.

Should I cut the umbilical cords myself?

Usually the mother does it. Have clean tools and know how from your vet in advance, and call your vet if you are unsure.
