Why both can be useful

The early ultrasound confirms she is pregnant and that the embryos have heartbeats. The late X-ray gives the count you need to know when she has finished whelping, and helps your vet judge whether puppies can pass her pelvis. Many breeders and vets schedule both.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

When should a pregnant dog have an ultrasound?

Around day 25 to 30, to confirm pregnancy and see heartbeats.

When is the best time for an X-ray?

From about day 50 to 55. Skeletons are mineralized, so the puppies can be counted and head size checked against her pelvis.

Is a pregnancy X-ray safe?

Late in pregnancy, when the skeletons are formed, X-ray is considered safe at the doses used, and vets rely on it for the puppy count. Early X-rays are avoided because they show nothing useful.

Can an ultrasound tell me how many puppies?

Not reliably. The uterine horns curl and overlap, so puppies are easily double-counted or missed.
