Dog mating, the tie and pregnancy

A tie is common in dog mating, but it does not decide whether she conceives. Timing does.

What is the tie?

After mating, the male’s penis swells inside her and the two dogs stay locked together, usually facing opposite ways. This is normal and can last from a few minutes to half an hour. It helps keep semen in place.

What matters more than the tie

  • Timing of the mating relative to ovulation. Use progesterone testing to find it.
  • Healthy sperm and a fertile male.
  • Her health and age.

After mating

  • Write down the dates and times of every mating.
  • Keep her calm and keep other males away for the rest of her fertile days.
  • Use the due date calculator with these dates. The range is wide without a progesterone date.
  • Plan an ultrasound for day 25 to 30. See how soon you can tell.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Does a tie mean the dog is pregnant?

No. A tie makes pregnancy likely if the timing is right, but it does not guarantee it. If the mating was outside her fertile days, she will not conceive.

Can a dog get pregnant without a tie?

Yes. Sperm can be released before and during the tie, so she can conceive without a full one.

How long does a dog tie last?

Usually 5 to 30 minutes, sometimes longer. Never pull the dogs apart, because it can injure both.

How many times should dogs mate?

Many breeders and vets use two matings about 24 to 48 hours apart in her fertile window. More is not usually needed if the timing is right.

What if I do not want her to be pregnant after an accidental mating?

Call your vet within a few days. Options exist, and they work best when started early.
